Arcam introduces the rCube, a portable docking station for iPod that delivers outstanding sound quality. The rCube is a unique, expensive and highly sophisticated product, which perfectly combines quality and portability, two concepts that unfortunately do not always go well together.

A rechargeable battery powers the rCube, providing from six to seven hours of playing time. Of course, you can also use the rCube plugged into a conventional outlet, which doubles as a battery recharger.

The rCube is a sealed block that traps low frequencies. As both low frequency speakers are placed back to back, vibration is reduced in the rCube. Result: you get natural bass that is well defined and pleasant to listen to. This is often where the problem lies, when manufacturers try to get good bass from a compact body. Arcam has done it.

The 30-pin socket for docking the iPod is located at the top. You can also send music wirelessly directly to rCube if you have the USB key or 30-pin transmitter, which are both optional. Finally, for more of a surround sound effect, you can synchronize more than one rCube. The iPod on the first will play on the second or third…

A detail to consider: rCube faithfully reproduces the music sent to it via the dock or a wireless connection. So, if you have poor quality MP3 files, you might want to consider updating your library.

This is often the case when CDs are transferred to a computer and to avoid taking up too much space, converting them diminishes quality. When you decide to pay $800 for the rCube, it’s nice to have good quality media.

The rCube from Arcam is available in black or white.

The audio quality of music files is often disappointing. It is the same for music produced with Internet radio. A little tiny box, designed by Arcam, allows the audio quality of these files to be greatly improved. Here is the Solo rDAC.

With the growing popularity of Internet radio and the widespread use of portable media players, converting DAC (Digital to Analogue Conversion) is increasingly popular with even the most picky music lovers.

Arcam, who produced the BlackBox, a DAC converter designed for CD players, now offers the Solo rDAC, a more modern equivalent. With its coaxial, USB and optical SPDIF inputs, you can connect your computer, MP3 player, game console, etc. The RCA output, with gold-plated connectors, are the link between the digital source and the audio receiver that receives the analogue signal. Of course, a high-fidelity receiver is strongly recommended. Otherwise, the impact of the analogue conversion will be much less perceptible to the ear.
