The new Bose OE2 and OE2i headphones have just arrived on the market. Marking the new generation of on-ear headphones from Bose, the OE2 are lighter, more compact than previous models and available in a version that is compatible with the iPhone and iPod.

The TriPort technology, exclusive to Bose, provides perfectly balanced sound with present bass frequencies and good high frequencies. And so you don’t lose any of the music, the pads have contours in memory foam that fit perfectly on the ears and remain in place. As for the band, it is thin and has no other pressure points that those on each side of the head.

There is only one wire that connects to the headphones. This avoids embarrassing Y cables that get tangled up when you store them. And while we’re on the subject of storage, they fold in on themselves and can be stored flat. They can then be easily slipped into a bag without creating too much clutter.

The Apple Version: OE2i

The OEi version is designed specifically to be used with Apple devices. Even the wire has a small remote control that allows you to control the volume and navigate through your music library, among other things. And if you use the headphones with an iPhone, you can also receive and end a call and then go from listening to music to the phone function with a single button.

OE2 and OE2i Headphones and are available in black or white.

Although the previous version of the SoundLink from Bose was noteworthy, the latest model in this popular series is even more impressive! The new SoundLink Bluetooth for smartphone from Bose is more compact, more efficient and more powerful!

With Bluetooth, the SoundLink connects wirelessly directly to your smartphone, tablet or computer. As for the rechargeable lithium battery, it allows for up to eight hours of continuous music. You will find an auxiliary input to plug in devices that are not Bluetooth compatible and a USB port for downloading Bose updates if you need to.

The photo is a good indication of the dimensions of the SoundLink from Bose. Easy to slip into a bag, it can be carried around everywhere you go. And when the opportunity arises, we can share your music without having to plug anything in. When folded, the nylon or leather cover can be used as a support to hold the SoundLink upright.

The device can store up to six Bluetooth pairing connections and will function smoothly within a radius of ten metres. The SoundLink is available in gray with a nylon cover and in dark brown with a leather cover. For other colour options, other covers can be purchased separately.

In its advertising campaign, Bose places a lot of emphasis on spontaneity: no matter where you are, keep the SoundLink with you and you’ll always be ready to get the party started!

Bose was the first to try to reduce background noise for its headsets. That was 20 years ago. The concept of noise reduction has evolved continuously since that time and the QuietComfort 3 and 15 are proof. By using an active system and a passive system that work together to eliminate background noise, it gives the listener a unique experience. Just what you can expect from a company like Bose.

The active system for the QuietComfort headset is equipped with microphones that pick up the sounds inside and outside of the earpiece. They analyze the ambient sounds and eliminate them with opposite frequencies. To complete this technical decoding of the sounds, the material for the ear pads is specially designed to physically block the sounds, even sounds coming from the outside.

You can also use the QuietComfort to enjoy the silence. Without listening to music, you can still engage the noise reduction system.

The QuietComfort 15 headset runs on AAA batteries, while the QuietComfort 3 headset uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery capable of isolating you from the outside world for 25 hours!

In both cases, the headsets are delivered with a carrying case that is perfect for travelers.

What happens when a first-class audio equipment company starts moving into high-definition video territory? The result is Bose’s VideoWave audiovisual system: a home theater hidden in a 46-inch screen that is on the cutting edge of technology

Bose has often distinguished itself by offering systems that are complete, but also compact. VideoWave is no exception, once more they have focused on simplicity and high-quality.

The most striking feature is the invisible speakers. There are sixteen in total, which means you don’t need to have a multitude of speakers surrounding you to enjoy a truly cinematic experience.

The concept consists in placing several speakers behind the screen. Bose’s array technology and proprietary PhaseGuide™, combined with ADAPTiQ audio calibration, does the rest of the work. They take into account the room size, furniture placement and use walls to bounce high frequencies and reproduce a surround sound effect.

For low frequencies, the speakers are placed inside the casing of the screen. The frame acts as a sound box, eliminating the need for a subwoofer.

The 46-inch 1080p high definition screen is equipped with USB and HDMI inputs. The remote control is particularly interesting. It consists of only the most frequently used buttons (volume, channels, on/off). The remaining controls can be activated from a touchpad on the remote, which lets you navigate easily through the menus that appear on the screen.

As almost all the space around the TV is dedicated to the speakers, an external box serves as a brain for the device. This is where the inputs can be found (HDMI, satellite, USB, components, ect.) and where other devices can be plugged in (Blu-ray, DVD, etc.).

Important to mention is that the device weighs over 100 pounds.

Suggested retail price: just over $6,000, delivery and installation included.

For more information, visit the VideoWave system page at Bose.ca

It is almost officially summer. At the moment, many people are still making their final preparations: enlarging the deck, repairing the shed, completing planting in the flower beds, installing a lighting system, etc. This summer, why not have high quality sound outdoors? For the number of hours that you will spend outdoors, external speakers are a worthwhile investment, but before buying, what should you consider?

First, you need to ask yourself the following questions: where will the speakers be installed, what kind of weather will they be exposed to and how much are you willing to invest? In all cases, it will be your needs and your budget that will guide your purchase.

According to the models and the planned installation, you must consider the level of resistance required. A speaker placed directly on the ground will be constantly exposed to rain as opposed to a speaker mounted on a wall or under a ledge. A speaker placed near the pool, in addition to splashes, must be resistant to chemicals (chlorine, etc.). Resistance to humidity and water are often mentioned, but also think about the sun. UV rays are also harmful to plastics.

As far as the wiring, be prepared to spend some money. This will link your sound system and the speakers. Even with the best of systems and the best speakers, bad wiring will give poor performance and be unsatisfactory. If the wires are exposed to sunlight, use a UV-resistant cable. For wiring buried in the ground, keep in mind that the cables will be in a high humidity environment. Therefore, you must use cables provided with a protective sheath designed to be used underground. If you must use very long wires, consider buying a higher calibre wire. The signal degrades over long distances. And during the installation, think about animals, such as rodents…

During the winter, avoid using them. The cold weakens the speaker membranes and they may crack if they are used. It isn’t necessary to store them inside however. Covering them well, as you would a shrub, is sufficient.

In closing, you can find wireless, Bluetooth and rechargeable outdoor speakers for less than $100. Be wise before buying. While the offer may sound tempting, this type of product may let you down well before the arrival of cooler evenings in September. Not to mention the fact that the audio quality doesn’t compare to more sophisticated systems.

There are some very good alternatives to make up for space constraints if you live in an open concept loft or a small condo.

The Bose LifeStyle system: a complete system that comes in just a single box. It offers good distribution and excellent sound quality. For between $2500 to $4500, it’s easy to integrate and allows you to adjust your setup for all kinds of interior environments. And, you can even keep your setup when you finally move from the condo to a larger residence with a room dedicated to your home theatre system…. (Finally!)

Another option that’s in the same price range but perhaps a little bit more sophisticated is the 5.1 Kit with Paradigm Atom Monitors + CC-190 centre and B&W ASW-608 “subwoofer”. Its the perfect solution for cinema lovers because this ensemble delivers nothing short of a dynamic and explosive sound! With 2 pairs of speakers that can be set up either on stands or mounted on the wall, a centre channel from the same company and a B&W subwoofer you preserve the aesthetic of your interior design, all the while enabling you to take full advantage of your setup. To complement this system, I’d recommend the Denon AVR-2808 amplifier. (The whole ensemble comes out to be about $3000.)

You could also opt for Focal/JmLab “Dome” speakers, capable of offering incredible sonic power. We’ve already talked about them before in this blog – their sound quality is exceptional. If you connect a home theatre amplifier/receiver from ROTEL (the RSX 1057 for instance) with these speakers, you’ll have quite the experience! With a slick, aesthetically pleasing look, this solution is a little more expensive than the first two: about $4000. It’s the best value for the money in its class.

But for cinema enthusiasts ready to invest in a 5-star system, there’s even better options ……
