We all know Netflix, the video-on-demand service with a monthly fee. However, several Web-connected TVs don’t support subscriptions to NetFlix. CinemaNow is an alternative that is available to Canadians, particularly Panasonic customers.

CinemaNow has just arrived in Canada. The service is similar to what NetFlix offers. By contrast, with CinemaNow you pay for each item, renting movies and television shows one at a time. Prices start at $ 3.99 for a film and $ 2.49 for an episode, or you can buy the digital version for $ 9.99 per item.

Already, at launch time, there are over 10,000 shows and movies offered to customers. Unlike other suppliers of entertainment TV, you don’t have to subscribe to CinemaNow. For those who do decide to register, they can store movies and videos virtually, in addition to having access to new and exclusive titles.

To install CinemaNow on your TV with Panasonic Viera Connect technology, visit the Viera Connect Market from the device. Most 2010 and 2011 Panasonic TV models are compatible with this new movie rental interface.

The CinemaNow service is powered by Roxio platform technology.

Panasonic recently unveiled the prototype of a new digital camera, the Lumix 3D. While double-lens digital cameras that take three-dimensional images are slowly appearing on shelves, the latest offering from Panasonic may hold an enviable place within this class of compact cameras.

Able to shoot in both high-definition and three-dimensional, this 3D HD ability will distinguish the Lumix from several models that are currently on the market. The two 4x lenses are equivalent to 25-100 mm lenses. Each lens has an image stabilization system and the optical zoom makes it possible to capture landscapes in wide-angle or telephoto mode.

Also, a HDMI cable can connect the camera to a 3D TV to view photos and videos in optimal conditions. You can also insert the SD card directly into the slot of a Panasonic VIERA 3D television to view files. Of course, you can still use this camera to photograph and film in regular 2D HD mode.

Increasingly, consumers are benefiting from devices that offer entertainment in 3D. But creating in 3D is still expensive. The fact that many dual-purpose devices are entering the market could have an effect on the price. Panasonic wants people to be able to produce 3D content the same way they are able to view it.

The release date has not yet been revealed, but we think that Christmas would be a very wise choice for Panasonic. However, some rumours suggest that the Lumix 3D will arrive later this winter.

Panasonic surprises with the HM-TA20, a waterproof video camera. The HM-TA20 is presented in conjunction with the HM-TA2, which is almost identical but does not go underwater. Two new products now on the market for handheld video cameras.

The vertical design is very similar to that of the Sony Bloggie or Cisco Flip. Probably the best way to sum up the device is that it’s easy to hold and allows for better positioning of the screen.

Like the competing binoculars, there is the same single button for recording and stopping. The HDMI and USB connectors enable viewing and transfer, and built-in software facilitates uploading to YouTube and Facebook.

The TA20 model can go underwater to a depth of 3 m and can withstand the shock of a 1.5 m fall. It has a 3-inch wide screen, and a new technology called NightView, which should give better results when recording in low light.

It records in MPEG-4, 1920 x 1080, has an 8 megapixel lens and is equipped with an image stabilizer.

The Canadian release date is not set yet, but it will most likely be before the summer holiday period!

For more information about the HMTA2 and the HMTA20, visit the Panasonic website.

In the iPod or iPhone bases market, competition is fierce and to stand out from the crowd, the companies involved have really launched a design war. Panasonic has just come out with the SC-SP100, a compact and charming tool that will allow us to completely enjoy what is on our Apple player.

The speakers for this 2.1 audio system are placed on either side of the rounded shell, like the control buttons, thus completely freeing up the face of the SC-SP100. The front, barely wider than the player, serves only to receive the iPod or iPhone and does so prominently. The visual result is quite successful and its design makes a choice to consider for those with limited space.

Besides the design, a very interesting element of the product is that it can be connected to your computer, via the USB port, and transferring files to your iPod/iPhone can be done without having to remove the base.

To ensure rich sound throughout the range of frequencies, the SC-SP100 is also equipped with a 2.5-inch subwoofer. The total power of 20W is not very impressive, but more than enough for your workspace. An auxiliary input jack is also available, allowing another analog source to be connected.

The suggested retail price is $150 and it will be available starting in March.

For more information, visit the Panasonic Canada website.

An HDMI port allows the device to be easily used with an HD television. Panasonic guarantees a battery life of about three hours.
