Sennheiser has created a rather unusual contest to celebrate the FIFA World Cup of soccer: giving consumers the chance to contribute to the design of the HD 418 headphones. Weekend designers had until May 31, 2010 to submit their designs. Now it is time to vote.

Throughout the World Cup, people can vote for their favorite design on the Sennheiser site. The 15 most popular will be used for limited edition HD 418 headphones. The HD 418 are known for their impressive bass reproduction and urban design.

Professor Fritz Sennheiser died at the age of 98 last May 17. The founder of the Sennheiser Electronic company was considered a pioneer in the audio industry. Although he transfered power to his son at the age of 70, he continued to be actively involved in the company.

Fritz Sennheiser built his first radio at the age of 11 from copper wire and a 20 meter long radio antenna. Obviously interested in electronics and telecommunications, he directed his studies towards engineering. His first major work included the construction of a giant reverberation unit attached to a modified piano that was used for the opening ceremony of the Berlin Olympics, in 1936.

The company was founded in 1945 in a telecommunications laboratory that had been abandoned by the British. This was in post-war Germany and the laboratory, with very little equipment, employed only seven people. Today, more than 2,100 employees work there. The Sennheiser name is synonymous with quality and excellence across a large range of headphones, microphones and wireless transmission systems. The company is headquartered in Connecticut and has representation in 60 countries.

In addition to leading the family business, Fritz Sennheiser taught part-time at the University of Hannover until he was 68.
