In 1912, Tokuji Hayakawa establishes a small metalworking shop in Tokyo. In 1915, he invents the world's first mechanical pencil called "Ever-Sharp" from which the company's name is derived. Over time, the company diversified its activities in three main areas:

  • Consumer electronics (audio-visual, telephony and appliances);
  • Professional electronics (telecopiers, calculators, printing systems, cashing systems);
  • Components (electronic, solar, integrated circuits, LCD’s).

Sharp announced two new Blu-ray players at the CES 2009. The BD-HP22U and BD-HP16U are third-generation players and have a retail price of $300 and $280 respectively.
