Are you planning on buying the latest 3D television for Christmas? Actually, the option seems very interesting … but you’re hesitating because you’re waiting for 3D without glasses? Well you’ll have to be patient, because Sony is not planning on releasing one until 2015. And of course, it is unlikely that the price will be affordable.

In the laboratory, Sony is already able to create great 3D images without glasses. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a few years before this can be recreated in consumer products.

But at the last Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Toshiba and Sony presented their versions of 3D displays without glasses. So why wait until 2015 when laptops and cell phones are capable of generating a three-dimensional image that can be seen with the naked eye? It was explained that at the moment, what Sony televisions can do on big screens at the factory doesn’t meet the requirements of the general public. In other words, they are not ready yet.

But in the short-term, Sony has some nice surprises in store for us. In 2015, it is also planning on releasing the first large screen OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode). Just when we thought we had reached the summit of color contrast and absolute device thinness, it looks like we haven’t seen anything yet!

That said, two conclusions are: the best is yet to come … and don’t deprive yourself of the technology you crave that is available now. After all, it is Christmas!

Sony 3D televisions from the 2011 Bravia Series that are connected to the Internet can now access Sony’s 3D Experience service. This on-demand service presents promotional videos in 3D. Among the first video clips is a highlights feature from the 2011 Wimbledon tennis championship.

This service is available immediately and is intended to provide varied and current 3D content, free of charge. The only cost related to downloading data is the bandwidth from your Internet provider. But watch out, the amount of information needed to provide this 3D content is substantial and exceeding your download quota should be expected.

Films, movie trailers, music videos, documentaries and sports programming are already included in the list of 30 titles now available. It will be particularly interesting to actually watch the trailer in 3D for a film that will be presented 3D.

Currently, the 3D Experience service is only accessible on Bravia 3D Internet Video televisions. However, in the future it is expected that 3D Blu-ray and home theater systems integrated with Sony 3D Blu-ray will eventually be able to access this on-demand service.

All Bravia televisions sold in 2011 have this technology, which allows viewers to take advantage of this unique online 3D library.

Sony continues to develop its online music and video on demand services. The new virtual multimedia library, Music Unlimited, is now partially available to customers in Canada. It will now be possible to access almost unlimited audio and video content from a Bravia TV or Sony Blu-ray player with Wi-Fi.

Currently, you can already watch movies, TV shows and documentaries ordered online through Music Unlimited, directly from a television.

On the music side, there are more than six million songs on Music Unlimited. Users can listen to music online without having to download it. Unlike iTunes, where you have to pay for each song, Music Unlimited works with a fixed monthly payment. Canadian prices have not yet been established, but south of the border our neighbours are paying $5 U.S. per month for limited access to radio stations, and $ 13 U.S. for unlimited access to the entire Sony music library.

Members can create their own playlists, sync them with their personal playlists and enjoy their music wherever Internet access is available. Having supper with the in-laws? Prepare your list of songs from the Bravia in your living room and play it at your sister-in-law’s from a Sony Blu-ray Wi-Fi or the kids’ PS3.

Users who already have an account on the PlayStation Network can use the same access codes.

We will notify you of the complete availability in Canada. There is also talk of a possible link with Android devices.

Sony unveiled its new Bravia TVs for 2011 at the beginning of the month. Internet connection, 3D, LED and video on demand are the features that have attracted attention. We will present some of the new Bravia models, from the entry-level ones to the more advanced ones at the top of the line. Note, Sony relies heavily on Qriocity video-on-demand (not currently available in Canada) and the Wi-Fi connection.

The small X320 models are available in sizes of 22, 24 or 26 inches diagonally. All work with Edge-LED technology. The quality of the contrast is impressive, and the frame will be diminished. The X320 series is equipped with Wi-Fi.

A little larger, there is the EX520, which doesn’t work with LED, but with a conventional neon system that is found in other LCD models. All connect with Bravia Internet Video and come in three sizes: 32, 40 or 46 inches.

Before going into the top of the line, we propose the EX521. Back to Edge-LED technology and sizes of 32, 37, 40 and 46 inches, and Wi-Fi is still part of the features.

For 3D, you have to go to the EX720 in sizes of 32, 37, 40, 46 and 55 inches.

Then, in 3D compatible models, the NX720S, with dynamic LED technology (Local Diming) are very interesting choices due to their monolithic design and the ability to place them on a base. Everything that is most elegant. They come in sizes of 40, 46, 55 or 60 inches, the last size however doesn’t have a base.

Finally, the X920 is at the top of the list. It has a monolithic design, is available in sizes of 46, 55 or 65 inches and comes with a base. The same technology as the NX720 with dynamic LED, XReality Pro image processing, Flow XR 800 (800 Hz) motion compensation, and a 3D and Wi-Fi transmitter.

These new TVs should arrive on the market within the first months of 2011. The prices are not yet available.

The madness of 3D is quickly invading the houses of aficionados of new technologies. Sony is adding to this by offering 3D audio systems compatible with its new BRAVIA televisions. Three models are offered: two compact bars and a home theatre package.

The HT-CT150 and HT-CT350 are systems with subwoofer speakers and a sound bar that consists of three speakers (left, center, right). They provide a power of 340 watts and 400 watts in total and are designed to attach to the 32-inch (CT150) and 40 inch (CT350) models of the Bravia HDTV.

On the other hand, the 5.1 HT-SF470 is a complete home theatre system operating wirelessly using S-Air technology. Its power of 1000 watts (175 watts per channel + 167 watts for subwoofer) is likely to be clearly sufficient for a unique experience.

In any case, Sony has informed us that for satisfactory results, you need to have the Sony Blu-ray 3D player. At the rear of these sophisticated devices, three HDMI input jacks are required to receive and decode the signal. All three systems have Sony Digital Media Port technology (to connect audio devices via a USB, coaxial, optical link, etc.) and four HDMI ports with the Audio Return Channel function (three inputs and one output).

The HT-CT150 and HT-CT350 products will be available in May 2010 at the respective prices of $300 US and $400 US. The HT-SF470 model will be available in June at the cost of $550 US.

Sony has just announced the release of the S-Airplay, a new wireless multi-room sound system for your iPod. The S-Airplay transmits wireless audio from a base station and can support up to 10 receiver/speakers placed in different rooms all over the house.

Equipped with an AM/FM tuner, one of the interesting features of the new system from Sony is the dual source capability that allows users to listen to music coming from the iPod in one room, while people in another room listen to a radio station coming from the S-Airplay’s tuner at the same time.

Andrew Sivori, the director of marketing at Sony, explains that the S-Airplay allows you to take full advantage of the iPod without having to bring it around from room to room. In addition, I’d say that the S-Airplay makes it a lot easier and much more user-friendly for you to access your library of music.

The S-Air speakers include a remote control capability that controls the iPod and allows navigation of its music tracks. The speakers also incorporate a sleep timer and an alarm clock function. Finally, a composite A/V output allows the S-Airplay to easily connect to your home theatre system.

Like most iPod stations, the S-Airplay will charge your iPod while it is docked.
